Wiggins Lake Authority Board
by Mike Hermann 9/18/24
The Wiggins Lake Level Authority Board met on September 17th at 7PM at the Sage Township Hall for the final meeting of the year.
It was reported that the lake has maintained the desired level all year with the automation handling the opening and closing of the Sluce Gates as appropriate. The larger Tainter Gate has not been utilized this year.
The volunteer operations team along with the County Drain Commissioners Office completed the following during 2024:
Replaced the Human Interface (touch screen) at the dam site to allow continued access remotely of the software that operates the dam.
Replaced a broken window and sealed a developing crack between the dam house and sidewalk on the south side of the dam house after consultation with Spicer Engineering
The security camera's at the dam were replaced at a cost significantly below original bids as a lake resident sourced and helped install the new system. At previous inspections the State Regulators and the county's insurance company requested this upgrade.
The catwalk was adorned with 5 American Flags to be on display between Memorial Day and Labor Day!
Performed all normal maintenance tasks and inspections as required by our Operations and Maintenance Manual.
The Board operated under budget (equivalent to our annual operations assessment of approximately $43,400) and therefore we should be able to pay back all monies loaned to the Board from the Drain Commissioners Office in 2023 before the Operating Assessment was re-established.
Significant projects planned for 2025 include investigation of an internet upgrade at the dam site to support the newly installed cameras mentioned above, and the tri-annual professional inspection required as Chappel Dam has a high hazzard designation from the state dam safety agency.

The Lake Level Authority held their scheduled meeting on July16th, at 7:30 PM at the Sage Township Hall.
It was reported that the lake level has been consistent and withing the desired range since the last meeting in May. No security or unplanned maintenance issues were reported.
The volunteer group took on the assignment to install American flags on the catwalk in honor of July 4th!
Lastly, there have been no significant budget variations this year and it's expected that the current year assessment will cover all costs.

Follwing is a short update from the Lake Level Authority (dam) meeting last night:
The lake remained within an inch of desired level since the last Authority meeting in Sept 2023.
No security or significant unplanned maintenance issues were discovered during that time.
There was limited spring runoff based on the winter weather and the boards were reinstalled so the lake level returned to summer level by April 15 as planned.
The assessment is providing revenue as expected. The Authority confirmed we expect to remain within our approximate $43,000 annual operating budget.
2024 planned projects include replacement of the software interface (HMI) at the dam, repair of a small crack in the sidewalk at the dam house and implementation of the maintenance steps outlined in the Operations plan.

Just a reminder that the lake will return to "Summer" level by April 15th annually. The volunteer team will re-install the boards in the Spillway a couple days prior to April 15th to assure the lake reaches and maintains the summer level. Any questions can be addressed to info@wigginslake.org
